I've heard the Japanese license change test is difficult, what can I do to increase my chances of passing?

Six months ago, I, like many of you in Okinawa, was in a position where I needed to change my American drivers license into a Japanese license. I'd searched on the internet and talked to many people, and it looked like this driving test was no joke. Needless to say, I was worried, and being the impatient type, I wanted to get my license changed over ASAP. I went into the test ready to fail, but after I'd completed the course, the tester looked at my and said you pass with a perfect score. Was I born under a lucky star? I'm not sure, but I'd like to tell you what I did to pass the driving test on the first try.

Welcome HJaltlander,

Welcome to the forums. Okinawa is a beautiful place. If you get a chance to visit Japan, I'd recommend a stop in Okinawa. The sea here is beautiful and you can enjoy a lot of marine sports that you can't in other parts of Japan. Plus, the people here are very friendly. Smiley

I live in Milwaukee, WI. When I was in Okinawa for my trip, my wife e-mailed and said that it was snowing, the kids had a snow day at school, and she had to dig out the truck from the snowbank. She asked me if I felt guilty being in 70 degree weather. I told her "Not one bit!" I love the US, but am looking forward to having an Okinawan address.

I used to live on the south side, but am currently just shy of the northern border of the city and county on 76th street. I love cheese too, but since I am originally from CA, I am partial to California cheese vs Wisconsin cheese. One question though: Do you miss Kopps Frozen Custard? Or are you partial to Leon's?

I am partial to a place called Gilles on 76th and Bluemound.......I used to work there part time when I was in HS. Grin

BUT if I had to choose between the two I would still pick Gille's sorry just joking, Leon's I think, but I will be honest it has been quite a few years since I tasted either Cry

One of my brothers lives in your neck of the woods.  That area has changed dramatically from when I was a kid, particularly the area around the former Northridge.  Is it getting better now a days?

Sorry this took so long to reply!

This area by Northridge has been depressed ever since they shut down the mall for riots and general unrest. It's starting to come back, but it is slow progress.

To stay on topic, where do you folks all live in Okinawa? This way the addresses work in Naha was baffling to me. I understand a GPS is essential to find a new place or keep from getting lost. How do you guys keep it straight?

BTW - My wife and I much prefer Kopp's. We started going there when we would come to church in Milwaukee from college in Watertown. Lots of memories eating there after church on Sundays!
