at the southern end of Japan. Okinawa is located between Kyusyu
and Taiwan. Major Asian cities such as Taipei, Shanghai, Hong
Kong, Seoul, Manila and Tokyo are all located within a 1,500km
radius of Okinawa. Because of its close proximity to the major
Asian cities, Okinawa represents the southern gate to China,
Southeast Asia and Oceania.
The only region which has a sub-tropical climate in Japan, it
offers a warmer climate with the average temperature of approximately
23 degrees and is blessed by beautiful seasonal flowers and
abundant nature areas. Its peculiar culture and environment
attracts a lot of people and is inviting for many foreign sight-seers.
Commodity price in Okinawa is relatively stable and lower than
those in mainland Japan. Okinawa University offers good circumstances
with abundant nature and unique cultures, for you to live and
study.
(1) Accommodation
Okinawa University does not have accommodation on the campus,
though it introduces apartment room near the campus. Students
who wish to ask the university to be guarantor for renting room
should join insurance.
Upon signing a contract to rent an apartment, Japanese customary
practice requires the tenant to pay not only the rent but also
non-refundable key money equivalent to one month rent, called
"rei-kin" in Japanese payable to the landlord. The
landlord keeps a returnable deposit equivalent to one to two
months' rent called "shiki-kin" in Japanese, as security
in case the tenant should fail to pay the rent of the room.
Part of "shiki-kin" will be paid back to the tenant
when leaving the room. In addition, the tenant should pay a
commission equivalent to one month rent to the realty dealer.
(2) Living cost in Okinawa
Living cost including accommodation fee varies from 60,000 to
120,000 yen.
(3) Expenses for medical treatment
1 National Health Insurance
Japan has a compulsory insurance system, and all those living
in Japan must be covered by some form of insurance. Foreign
students studying in Japan for more than one year should apply
for National Health lnsurance. The insurance will cover 70%
of medical payment. The amount students will pay varies somewhat
in different cities, towns and villages. The premium does not
change no matter how many times you use your insurance.
2 JASSO International Student Medical Expenses Reimbursement
program
The JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) International
Student Medical Expenses Reimbursement program offers an additional
refund (Maximum 80%) of part of the medical expenses incurred.
(Note that reimbursements cannot be made for medical treatment
that is not covered by the National Health Insurance system.)
Accordingly, using both the National Health Insurance system
and JASSO's reimbursement program, an international student
will have to pay minimum 6% of a medical bill for any treatment
covered by the insurance.
